I remember seeing it as a child and would love to have a copy to show someone who had never heard of it. I recall also that in elementary school my class won a talent show doing our redition of Purlie... Melba's rendition of Luttibelle Gussie Mae Jenkins was the hit of the show. It would be nice to share this inspirational comedy with my own child.... |

| Posted by Ruth Chapman , on 12/16/2007 09:25:56 | Dear Ms. Melba Moore,
Thank you so much for your contributions of talent and inspiration to youths throughout your career. I was able to take my first students to see you in "Purlie." Since then, they have been inspired to follow their creative callings. In recent years, I had the opportunity to speak with you at the NBTF. Again, you inspired the young people who accompanied me. Now, I am writing to you on behalf of a group of talented young people. The Destiny Productions Theater Ensemble is a group of teenagers from inner city Philadelphia who perform a profound play entitled, "If Only You Knew." It is designed to address the social ills that young people face, but more importantly, it offers solutions to move to a place of healing. Because I know that you have a heart for young people, I am asking for an opportunity for these deserving young people to see your performance of "Ain't Misbehavin' " while you are here in Philadelphia. This opportunity would be a life changing event for these youngsters. They were blessed to be able to perform at the NBTF in August, and were also invited to be a part of the Reader's Theater. They did a fantastic job! I would love to have them see you perform, and if possible, have a few moments of your time to receive your words of encouragement. I greatly appreciate your work, and look forward to receiving a response to this inquiry. May God bless you during your stay in Philadelphia. I can be contacted at 267 246-2665 or at RDestiny51@aol.com. Sincerely,
Ruth C. Chapman

I'm so happy to be on your guestbook. Guess What!!! I've been impressed with your singing for many many years since the 1970's. I listened to your songs, purchased them and studied them. I've always loved your voice. About 3 years ago down at City Hall in Newark during Gospel month I saw you there when you sang "Lift Every Voice." I am a former member of Dr. Albert J. Lewis Jr's choir, World Gospel Musical Association.
I am presently with Proclaim Choir of Montclair, NJ. founded by Ira J. Roberts formerly known as "Chico Mendoza." I haven't kept up with you in a while because I've been on the go but you are still in my heart. LOVELY VOICE...

We worked together in Personnel Records as clerks. That was 1972 to 1976. I think of her once in awhile and wonder how she is doing. Today I watched the movie, The Fighting Temptations, and saw your name pop up. I don't follow Hollywood much but your name sounded familiar. I seem to recall Barbara telling me that she had a sister who was a singer/actress by your name. Is that you? Is Barbara your sister? If so please give her my greetings and best wishes. When I knew her she was struggling to raise two teenagers. I moved to Massachusetts and lost track of her. I hope all is well with her. I know she was very proud of her sister, but then, as now, I wasn't familiar with too many names of actresses or musicians. Your songs sounded wonderful at your website. I'll look for your CD. Whether you are Barbara's sister or not you share the same wonderful smile. She was also a very strong woman with a desire to do well. With warm memories and best wishes. Janet" |

If you heard someone screaming your name, that was me! I love your angelic voice, your talent and your spirit. I fell in love with your spirit when I was a teenager. I followed you in Purlie, I raced through homework to watch you and Clifton Davis in your variety show. I thought you and Clifton Davis were the perfect couple ( l loved Clifon too). I was so disappointed when you two separated. And have always I loved your music. When I heard "Lean On Me" for the first time, that was it for me.. It still remember how your voice just brought chills all over me.. I still have the album. I remember setting the turn table arm to play that song over and over again. There aren't many artists I go "coo coo for coco puff" over, but you are certainly one of them - Prince is the other... Pure god-given talent... All -around talent. You do it all. I truly missed you... Please bring your one woman show to Houston You are a gem! SAC |

| Posted by Rabbi Elliot Rosenbaum , on 09/30/2007 16:21:52 | First: For all those who would like to have a DVD of Purlie with Melba Moore: MovieLead is a Hollywood company which provides old move/video footage to the industry. The video and audio weren't exactly High Def., but it's all there for $50: 866-259-2136.
Second: I feel like know Melba Moore, though I never met her in person! She attended Montclair State College's Music Department a few years before I started my Masters there in voice and theater arts. In addition, we both taught music in Newark Public School District.
Even though I now live in Texas, I still manage to get back to NYC every couple of years to see the best of the Broadway theater.
With all my years of seeing shows and (in what seems like a past lifetime) performing professionally in shows (AE), I can say,
without a doubt, that the singularly most astounding vocal performance I ever saw on stage was Melba Moore in Purlie. I went back 3 times to see her.
Now that I have a DVD of her performance, I have played it for others who are also amazed.
THANKS MELBA!! for giving me an unforgettable experience in the theater. |

""The Insider"" has confirmed that R&B legend LUTHER VANDROSS passed away Friday at the age of 54. Sources tell ""The Insider"" that Vandross' death was unexpected, and that a memorial service is planned in New York sometime next week. The singer sold over 25 million records during a long and successful career that began in the 1970s. In 1981, he released his debut album, Never Too Much, and went on to become one of the most popular musicians of the 1980s, cranking out lasting hits like ""Here and Now"" and ""The Best Things in Life Are Free."" Vandross hit the top of the charts again in the '90s with a duet with MARIAH CAREY of ""Endless Love."" His soulful pop crooning went on to inspire artists like USHER and ALICIA KEYS, as well as ""American Idol"" and record labelmate RUBEN STUDDARD. Sources also report that a tribute album for Vandross is in the works. In April 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke due in part to his struggle with diabetes; he then spent close to a month in a coma, and battled meningitis and pneumonia after the attack." |

Melba Moore - ""My Heart Belongs To You"" (Soulfuric) Reviewed by Dean Serafini
This is a track that people have been talking about for the best part of six months now in the time since the WMC. Melba Moore has been recording since the eighties and the height of the disco boom: this represents her first new material for quite some time. It’s quite a coup then for Soulfuric to pull off a combination that includes Moore herself, production from Ron Carroll and a remix from Jon Cutler. As for the track itself, there are three versions included beginning with Ron Carroll’s BMC Vocal Mix complete with gentle guitars, strings and a thunderous bassline which sounds even better the louder you play it. Next up comes John Cutler’s Distant Music Mix, which leans heavily towards the keyboards. Finally the WaWa dub goes straight for the kill with its beefed up beats whilst using the original guitars and strings from the to create a real main room vibe. The vocals are of course impeccable and combine with the production to make Ms Moore’s first foray into the 21st Century house scene a striking success." |

Reginald F. Lewis Museum Holds 2nd Knockout Gala featuring Melba, Jennifer, Regina and Stephanie
(BALTIMORE-Dec. 13) - If one attended last year's event, one could honestly presume it could not be topped. Featuring the likes of James Earl Jones and Bill Cosby, certainly, the spirit of Reginald F. Lewis was pleased with a phenomenal evening of top-notch entertainment.
In lieu of the talent last year, this year's gala, the second of its kind, was in no way a disappointment. Featuring four of the world's greatest vocalists - Melba Moore, Jennifer Holliday, Regina Belle, and Stephanie ""Real Love"" Mills - Saturday night's event attracted the creme de la creme of the black community.
The theme was ""A Soulful Celebration... A Dream Realized,"" and was co-produced by Louis Grasmick and Lucinda Williams.
Comcast was the major sponsor as proceeds benefit Baltimore's newest African American treasure, a museum dedicated to the black experience in Maryland.
From William Jews to investment icon Eddie Brown of Brown Capital Management to noted attorney Warren Brown, the Meyerhoff was clearly the place to be. Also present was Loida Nicolas Lewis, the wife of the late Lewis. Lewis, a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar Community High School and Wall Street mogul, is noted for his historic takeover of TLC Beatrice.
As Russell, Chairman of the Board for Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, took the podium, he welcomed the well-dressed audience.
""It is truly an honor to celebrate the past and future of this grand occassion - the past history and inspiration of Maryland's African Americans and the very near future of exhibitions and public programs in what is destined to be among this State's most revered institutions, a museum of the African American experience in Maryland,"" he said.
Loida N. Lewis, Chair of the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation, adds that ""since this time last year, the museum construction is finished. An absolutely unique and striking building is now standing on President and Pratt streets, not only enhancing the City of Baltimore, but standing as a beacon of knowledge and hope for the citizens of Maryland and beyond.""
The museum is set to open in the spring of 2005.
ELECTION TIME
Given that the next statewide election is in 2006, Saturday night's event was in no way short on politicians.
Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, and Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan all had a visible presence - shaking hands with plenty of smiles - at what could be viewed as the event of the year for the black community in Baltimore.
Both O'Malley and Duncan are expected to battle for the Democratic nomination for governor. The winner will face Republican incumbent Governor Robert Ehrlich.
Ehrlich, along with Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, symbolize Maryland's first Republican administration in 36 years.
Steele, upon winning the election over Democratic nominee Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend, became the first African American statewide elected official in the history of the State. Two other black Republicans - Melvin Bilal and Aris T. Allen - had unsuccessfully attempted this feat before.
Nonetheless, the gala brought many a smile that night.
According to Baltimore City Councilman Kenneth N. Harris, who also attended, told BMORENEWS that the affair was ""Awesome. Incredible. I'm speechless. Words cannot describe that evening.""
He added, ""It was the greatest concert I have ever attended. I have seen a lot of great concerts, but on that night, the sisters were throwing down. It was truly an intimate display of pure talent. There was energy from the dancers and the vocalists, including Morgan State University's choir.
Harris added, ""We were fed that night - spiritually, emotionally, physically. It was simply off the hook.""" |

| Posted by kathryn j sims , on 00/00/0000 19:18:29 | I am an aspiring artists who also writes and co-produced her own work. I am trying to get my Gospel CD out real soon. I too write Contemporary R & B gospel music. The name of my CD is going to be called Heaven Above with one person singing with me. He is a young talented young man. With very high potentials as becoming an R & B gospel singer. We are in need of some financial help with trying to pay for the tracks ourself. I am working part-time. And I know it costs money to have this done. Due to the fact that I am living as an Homeless person too. My family is very un supported of me doing this. Saying things like I am too old. Which I am only 42 years of age. I would like a feed back from you. Considering it too took you a long time to come back on top. I wish you well in your success. And may God keep on blessing you. I hope that he can bless us as well. Thanks for listening to my story. You can e-mail me or phone me. At 9016799378. Thanks we need all the gospel Industry to help. This will make my dream come true. Need to send my son to school on next year. Whom is a very talented young man as well. Once again thanks. |

When I heard of your coming I was in such disbelief that I had to call professor dunbar's office to confirm what he had already sent out to me on Voice-mail.
Sister Moore I truly thank God for you being an inspiration in my. For many years I have been a very strong supporter of all your musical works. As a young teenager, I was moved for words when I heard you perform the song titled, ""The long and winding Road"". I felt the annointing of the holy spirit come over me as your music pearced my soul with such strong convictions. I am now 44 years old and a six pack away from being fifty. (Smile)
I look forward to hearing your new CD titled ""I'm Still Here"" and watching you perform at the Florissant Valley Community College on Friday February 3, 2006.
I also would like to call upon you to review and indorse the ""Wailing Women Ministry"" which I have already forwarded information and a slid show presentation to your booking manger.
Thank you for all of your past and future support!
Sincerely,
Deacon Allen D. Wheeler Sr." |
